Xalapa (Coatepec & Xico), Veracruz, San Andres Tuxtla (Ruiz Cortinuez)

¡Buenas dias!

Tja, daar sta je dan.. 1,5 uur reizen vanaf Mexico-city. Zoals gepland: Totaal onvoorbereid, 15 kilo reisbagage en nul Spaanse bagage. Duzzz… The moment of truth: gaan we Spaanse les nemen of niet? Beide natuurlijk net zoveel zin in les als de hoeveelheid Spaanse kennis: nul. Maarja, een beetje Spaanse les kon natuurlijk wel eens bruikbaar zijn! Na lang brainstormen werden 2 weken al gauw 1 week, 4 dagen en uiteindelijk 2 x 4 uur. Meer dan genoeg voor deze twee talentjes. ¨Wij zijn immers toch jongens van de praktijk!¨

Naast de 4 uur les per dag hebben we natuurlijk niet stil gezeten. We hebben deze 2 dagen 2 mooie natuurparken bezocht. Na de cursus wilden we verder reizen. Op advies van onze wulpse, net iets te oude Mexicaane lerares zijn we nog een dagje extra gebleven om de dorpjes Coatepec en Xico (ten zuiden van Xalapa) te bezoeken. Coatepec staat bekend om zijn geweldige koffie. Onze darmpjes waren alles behalve hersteld van de tortillas uit Mexico City, maar deze goddelijke koffie konden wij toch niet aan ons voorbij laten gaan: knor knor. Ook hebben we in Coatepec de ¨Snake-hill¨ beklommen.Vanaf deze heuvel had hadden we een vet uitzicht over de stad en de omgeving.

In Coatepec zijn we wederom in een gammele, locale kippenbus gestapt (zonder kippen weliswaar) naar Xico. Na een toch van 3 km door bananenplantages, waar wij 10 km over deden en we 38 mensen moesten vragen naar de goede route, hadden we de waterval gevonden: A view to kill - see pics! Dit heerlijke pure schone water hebben wij uiteraard even goed bevuild met onze zwetende vieze lichamen.

Dezelfde avond zijn we voldaan in de bus naar Veracruz gestapt. Deze touristische badplaats c.q. havenstad (zonder touristen) vonden wij, naast een groot aquarium met haaien, niet heel fantastisch. Daarom zijn we diezelfde dag naar San Andres Tuxtla vertrokken.

Na aankomst in dit daldorpje, ´s avonds laat, kwamen wij klaarblijkelijk vrij verdwaasd over volgens twee missionarisen van onze lieve heer. Zij zagen in ons hun goede daad van de dag en brachten ons veilig en wel naar ons hotel. Na hun advies om na 21.00 uur niet meer naar buiten te gaan, zijn we om 22 uur in het dorpje opzoek gegaan naar een Corona: En God zag dat het goed was.

Omdat wij maar niet genoeg konden krijgen van cascaras (watervallen) zijn we de volgende ochtend naar het dorpje Del Salto de Eyipantla gegaan om er eentje te bekijken van 40meter breed en 80meter hoog (zie pics). Die dag hebben we verder alleen gerelaxd en ons klaargemaakt voor de tocht naar de vulkaan; San Martin.

Het enige wat we tot onze beschikking hadden was een naam van een gids in een gehuchtje 10x kleiner dan Annerveensche Kanaal. We hadden natuurlijk de vieze tourist kunnen uithangen en voor veel te veel geld een taxi kunnen nemen naar Ruiz Cortinuez (het gehuchtje), maar dat was ons natuurlijk niet avontuurlijk genoeg. Via de ¨officina touristico¨ hadden we gehoord dat er ergens in San Andres Tuxtla ¨el piratos¨ waren die je voor het luttige bedrag van 15 pesos (75cent) die kant op wilden brengen. Na de gebruikelijke vragenronde bij 18 Mexicanen is het ons gelukt de vertrekplek te vinden. Hier aangekomen kwamen we een Frans sprekend meisje, woonachtend in Zwitserland met Keniaanse roots uit Canada (de 2de gespotte donkere medemens en tevens de 2de tourist die we zijn tegengekomen) en een Mexicaanse vrouw met kind tegen. Zij stelden voor een taxi te nemen, wat wij uiteraard prima vonden.

Aangekomen in Ruiz Cortinuez bleek onze nieuwe vriendin iets meer queso te hebben gegeten van de Spaanse taal. Ze legde ons uit dat 2 kleine meisjes (11 en 14 jaar) ons ¨eventjes¨ naar onze slaapplaats zouden brengen. … Nou… dat hebben we geweten! Na een jungle-wandeling up the hill van 2,5 uur met backpack en zonder water, zijn we aangekomen bij iets met een dak en heeel veeul koeienpoep. Toch niet de meest ideale slaapplek. Gelukkig was onze gids, David Gonzalez ter plaatse. Hij heeft ons gastvrij ontvangen. De combinatie verse koeienmelk, oploskoffie en heeel veeul suiker is FANTASTISCH! Zo fantastisch dat Auke inmiddels zijn eigen koe heeft gekocht via marktplaats: afleveradres Zuidlaren!

Het lieve gezinshoofd heeft ons laten zien hoe verse kaas te maken en hoe fruitsoorten te kweken in de jungle. Ook legde hij ons met handen en voeten uit dat het totaal zinloos was om onze backpacks hiernaar toe te sjouwen. Deze hebben wij die avond namelijk in de jeep mee terug genomen naar het dorpje waar een warme maaltijd voor ons klaarstond, bereidt door oma van 250 kilo. Heeel lief! We mochten blijven slapen bij het gezin, Auke op de grond, Peter op een maïstafel.

De volgende dag dachten we ons enorm verslapen te hebben. De avond ervoor waren we namelijk zo moe dat we niet eens nagedacht hebben over een wekker. We hadden echter gelukt! We hadden geen rekening gehouden met het feit dat in deze periode de klok 1 uurtje terug moest óf we hebben al die tijd 1uur vooruit geleefd! We hebben nog steeds geen idee!!

Dit is een goed moment om in te gaan op Peters lievelingseten: Tortillas! Dit lekkernij wordt overal in Mexico tijdens elke maaltijd genuttigd. Zoals altijd waren wij weer onvoorbereid, zonder eten, begonnen aan deze tocht. M.a.w. Philips had geen keuze!

De lange jungletocht was Fantastisch, al dachten onze ¨músculos¨ daar wel eens anders over. Na een tocht van 5,5 uur up the hill, waren we doodop en hadden zelfs moeite om een rechtstuk over de kraterwand te lopen. De tocht naar beneden was gelukkig slechts 4 uur! Een slopend maar indrukwekkend weekend! Kosten 15 Euro p.p. :)

Vond je dit verhaal te lang? ¡Mala suerte!
